The Place

Menekşe Beach is one of the most crowded places in Istanbul during summer.

Close to the city, it fills quickly — loud, busy, overflowing.

For a period of time, it also became an unplanned sanctuary.

Syrian families who fled the war lived here in tents, at the edge of the beach, until permanent housing was arranged.

Their presence left traces — not visible, but felt.

This photograph was taken in winter.

The Moment

In winter, the beach empties.

The trees lose most of their leaves, revealing their structure — uneven, exposed, honest.

If you arrive just after sunrise, the place becomes still.

The noise disappears.

What remains is a quiet sense that the beach is holding everything it has witnessed — people, movement, absence.

That stillness lasts only briefly.

This photograph comes from that moment.

This is not an image meant to explain itself. It’s meant to be lived with — quietly — and revisited over time.
